I really did not get that much out of the preseason. Who knows what the Lions are going to do this year. I think the best indication will be from what we see when they play New Orleans in week 1. The only thing I know for sure is that Culpepper is in better shape, Stafford can throw the ball and Calvin Johnson can catch the ball. I am very excited to see what the Lions will do. I am also going to throw my 9-7 prediction out the door. The Vikings got better and I think Baltimore showed that they have some real talent during the preseason. I will be re-evaluating my predictions later this week.Joe Dzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00887530353785936762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1973557910422837790.post-32086618619261784252009-09-01T19:02:00.003-04:002009-09-01T19:21:49.692-04:00Mane Street: 9/1/09-- It looks like Matt Stafford is competing against himself right now for the starting job because Drew Stanton is having knee surgery and Daunte Culpepper suffered an injury to his toe.

-- The Lions have added two new quarterbacks by signing Brooks Bollinger and Kevin O'Connell. Before mentioning the Lions, I want to give a shout-out to the Red Wings. I was also able to stop by Hockey Fest 2009 before the game and they did a great job with that. There were tons of things to do for the entire family. With that being said, the Joe is getting pretty old and I hope they get a new stadium soon. I think it will really take the excitement for the Wings to the next level.

Let's start off with the numbers, which were somewhat impressive.

-- 25 First Downs
-- 151 Rushing Yards
-- 261 Passing Yards
-- 411 Total Yards
-- Time of Possession: 34 min, 21 sec

So what was so good about these numbers? Well, 25 first downs is impressive because it means that they are moving the ball. In the past seasons, there have been way too many "three and outs" where the offense could not get anything started. The time of possession was also good because it shows that they were able to control the ball. Not only did I feel that these numbers were good, they all happened to be better than the Colts' respective numbers. The Lions offensive numbers were clearly better.

C. Johnson, B. Johnson and Pettigrew all made an immediate impact on the team. It seems like it is much easier for the team to control the ball when all of the weapons are in place. In the first two preseason games they were playing without any of their starting receivers. In today's game they definitely made Culpepper and Stafford look better. Calvin Johnson was sharp and almost hauled in two touchdowns. Once was a circus catch that even the best receiver would drop and the other was just out of bounds. Bryant Johnson caught a nice touchdown pass from Culpepper at the beginning of the second quarter. Pettigrew also looked pretty good when hauling in a couple of passes.

I was impressed with the Lions first two drives with Culpepper under center. They moved the ball well and utilized the screen pass with Kevin Smith. Stafford also looked okay, while Stanton looked impressive as usual. After watching this game I think that the offense will definitely be better this year and should be able to win some games, whether it is Culpepper or Stafford at the quarterback position.

My real problem is with the defense. In the first quarter, the Colts just walked through the Lions and did what they pleased. Now, I know they Colts are good, but there were times they were moving the ball without any pressure at all. That was my main problem with the Lions' effort today. I know they had a few starters missing, but I just don't see an overwhelming improvement. I hope I am wrong and they show that they are improved as the season plays out, but as of now it is still their week spot.

So the offense looks good and the defense looks bad. That is the wrap after the third preseason game. Oh and there is one other thing that I took out of this game. The Lions have the best third string quarterback in the league. Drew Stanton always seems to amaze. This is the second time that he has came in and took us to victory. This time he even added a two point conversion for the win.Joe Dzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00887530353785936762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1973557910422837790.post-16460000315544760282009-08-26T18:46:00.003-04:002009-08-26T19:28:32.655-04:00Mane Street: 8/26/09-- It was a short stay for Swayze Walters and his sweet name. Swayze had an injured hamstring and the Lions needed someone to kick for Saturday's preseason game so they signed kicker Billy Cundiff.

-- There is good news in sight for the Lions receiving core. It looks like there is a chance that Brandon Pettigrew will play Saturday against the Colts. I really want to see what he can do as a receiver. He was a first round pick, so he better be good.

-- Louis Delmas seems to be pretty intense. First it was a hit on Aaron Brown and now on Aveion Cason. Apparently, Cason was letting up after a play near the goal line and Delmas hit him hard. The hit was hard enough to cause a scuffle at practice. Well, there have been two new ones released and I must say they are starting to be a stretch. The ones from previous seasons made you second guess if they were real or not. Even if they were not real, they were somewhat believable. I'm not loving the new ones for MJD and Darren Sproles.

In my opinion, these can't compare to Lawrence Maroney's Fantasy File:

Joe Dzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00887530353785936762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1973557910422837790.post-45211962762715227862009-08-23T20:51:00.005-04:002009-08-23T21:10:47.652-04:00Charlie Batch is Shaq's quarterback coach. There is a new show on ABC called Shaq versus. As the title implies, Shaq battles other athletes in their respective sports. This past week Shaq Daddy had to go head to head with Big Ben Roethlisberger. Who was Shaq's QB coach? The one and only Charlie Batch. If you need someone to teach you how to play the quarterback position, I don't think you want anyone that came out of the Lions organization. Come on Shaq, haven't you ever watched the Lions play football on Thanksgiving.

If you want to watch the whole episode, you can check it out here.Joe Dzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00887530353785936762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1973557910422837790.post-74716098598268286122009-08-22T23:01:00.003-04:002009-08-23T17:53:37.569-04:00They are the same old Lions. The Lions preseason winning streak has come to an end after the Cleveland Browns won by a score of 27-10. Nothing looked good for the Lions today. I can't believe how bad the starting defense looked. Cleveland's starters were able to march down the field at their will. On the other side, the Lions' offensive starters could not get anything going. Stafford looked like Joey Harrington and that is not good.

I'm not sure what to think after this game. It might put everything into perspective. Is it possible they are the same old Lions and I have just been drinking the Kool-Aide? If the starting QB was based on only preseason games, Drew Stanton would be starting in week 1 and that is not a positive when you have a proven veteran and a kid that you are paying $72 million. I may have to go take another look at my 2009 predictions and make some modifications.

On the other hand, it is only preseason and it doesn't really mean anything. They don't have any of their top receivers playing, although I was impressed with Dane Looker. Not bad for a guy that was at home building a deck last week. All I can say is that I hope these really are not the same old Lions. The way they played in the first quarter, on both sides of the ball, really scared me. I'm not sure what to think. I said that Tom Kowalski was not showing any love to the Lions, but he might have a good reason after watching tonight's game.Joe Dzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00887530353785936762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1973557910422837790.post-53634357377680381492009-08-21T23:53:00.003-04:002009-08-23T20:12:23.731-04:00The Killer is killing the Lions.Tom Kowalski has no love for the Lions this year. I shouldn't say that, he must love the Lions if his job is to cover them on a daily basis, but his predictions don't say much. He thinks that Detroit will only go 3-13 this year and that they will not join the ranks of other worst-to-first teams, such as Miami and Atlanta. I would have to disagree with that.

I am not going to say that they definitely will, but they do have a chance. I really like what the Lions have done. To start off, Matt Millen is gone. They only thing that worries me about Martin Mayhew is his initials. After Marty Mornhinweg, Matt Millen, Rod Marinelli and Steve Mariucci, I don't want to see another "M". That brings me to the next change, the coach. They brought in Jim Schwartz...sounds good, right? The defense that he ran in Tenesse proves that he knows what he is doing. Then, they brought in two veteran guys on the defensive side (Foote and Peterson) and have drafted hyped-up players like Louis Delmas. As long as Matthew Stafford, or Daunte Culpepper, can prove to be a serviceable quarterback this year, I am going to have to give the Lions a little more credit than the Killer does. With that attitude, we are going to have a very long season.Joe Dzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00887530353785936762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1973557910422837790.post-43053845756373499892009-08-21T22:19:00.005-04:002009-08-23T17:52:55.656-04:00Matthew Stafford will start in Cleveland. The $72 million dollar man will start the second exhibition game for the Lions. What does this mean? It means that we will all see some more of the "wildcat" offense. I can see Vick being used as the ultimate utility player. With his speed and athletic ability, he may bring the "wildcat" offense to a whole new level. According to the Star-Ledger, the Giants have already started working on their "wildcat" defense. According to the article:

"With his ability to play quarterback and this Wildcat offense just coming in, I'm quite sure they're going to be trying to explore some of those options."

Why not "explore the options" when you have a guy like Mike Vick? You would be crazy not too. You can't just let one of the most electric players in football to sit on the side lines. If the Eagles start to run the "wildcat" offense with Vick, why not try it with Stanton.

Drew Stanton's ability as a quarterback reminds me a lot of Mike Vick. When Stanton is under center and the play is breaking down, he has the ability to make something happen with his feet. We saw that in the preseason game against Atlanta and throughout his days at Michigan State. If I were the Lions, I would use Stanton in their own version of the "wildcat" offense. I remember when we had Josh McCown he lined up as a receiver a couple of times. Why not do this with Stanton? Put him out there as a RB with Culpepper or as a WR with Stafford. Mix things up a little bit. It has worked in Miami and will work it Philadelphia. I say, with a guy like Stanton, it's worth a shot.

Joe Dzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00887530353785936762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1973557910422837790.post-74738335937478936632009-08-16T01:15:00.008-04:002009-08-18T23:02:08.781-04:00Stanton Leads the Lions to Victory
After yesterday's game, the Lions' record has improved to 5-0 within the past two preseasons. The win against Atlanta was an outstanding game. It started a little slow, but the Lions took over in the end. I have not seen the Lions get a come-from-behind victory in a while. Yesterday's victory, even though most of it was played by the second and third stringers, was a classic.

From the very beginning of the game, the atmosphere of the fans was great. There was support for all three quarterbacks. When Culpepper was announced with the starting line up there were cheers. There were louder cheers when Stafford eventually came into the game. Although it was a great game, I fell that it really didn't tell us what we can expect from Culpepper and Stafford. They had absolutely no receivers to throw to.

The Detroit fans are great. The game started of with the usual singing of the National Anthem. The microphone cut out as the guy was singing it. All of the fans started singing it together in response. I thought that was pretty sweet. The game started with Atlanta on the offensive side. I thought about last year's season opener where Matt Ryan threw a bomb for a TD. They tried it again on the first play, but it was incomplete. I thought the defense looked solid, except on Turner's 40 yard TD run.

I was excited to see the new, slim and trim, Culpepper. Like I said earlier, there were no receivers to throw to, so Culpepper wasn't airing it out down field. He did seem like he was in much better shape. He proved to be pretty mobile when he was moving around in the pocket and on a couple keepers. He looked decent overall.

I was skeptical to see Matthew Stafford. He got plenty of cheers when he entered the game. He actually had some very nice passes, especially the touchdown to Derrick Williams. Unfortunately, most of these passes were dropped Keary Colbert. He could not hold onto the ball. He would have been off to the races for a TD with one of the drops. I was also impressed with Stafford's composure. He threw an interception for a touchdown and then came back by throwing a TD pass. That was impressive.

Then there was Drew Stanton. He did a good job in leading the offense and a great job getting the comeback win. He has the mobility to do anything, which he proved by running for 59 yards on only four rushes. I always wished that the Lions would have given him a real chance. I think he has some real potential.

There were two key to the game that I found to be most important. One was Aaron Brown. This kid has some skills. He is fast in the open field and can make people miss. I was glad to see this, especially after watching Cason ealy in the game. To me,Cason doesn't add much as a second running back. That is a position where Detroit may need some help. If Maurice Morris doesn't work out as a second option at RB, Brown might be able to make an impact. Speaking of running backs, Kevin Smith looked pretty good for the little time that he saw.

The other important thing that I noticed was the stats. On paper, Detroit easily beat Atlanta. They had 22 first downs! That's what I wanted to see. Even if they did not win, I want to see them move the ball down field. That is something that the Lions have always had trouble with. There are too many times where it was always three and out. Yesterday's game proved to be different.

I know it was just the preseason and it doesn't mean much, but I thought that the come-from-behind victory was huge. Could any group of guys have done that under Rod Marinelli. I'm not sure if they could have. Hopefully this win says something about Jim Schwartz and his coaching style. At this point, hope is all we can do.

If you missed the game, here are some links to the highlights from NFL.com:
Game Highlights
Matthew Stafford Highlights
Aaron Brown Highlights
Joe Dzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00887530353785936762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1973557910422837790.post-23595570104379036972009-08-15T13:36:00.014-04:002009-08-18T23:01:46.715-04:00Woodward Dream Cruise or Detroit Lions Game
I have not missed a Dream Cruise in the last ten years. I've always gone rain or shine. I didn't even miss it the year of the Great Blackout. This year it is going to be different. I was offered some tickets to go to the game today and I was not sure what to do. Should I go check out the greatest car show in the world or take a look at the all new Lions. Well, I decided to go with the Lions. I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to go see the $72 million dollar man in action. With that said, he better be the real deal.

I was able to make it down to the Dream Cruise last night. As many times as I have gone to this event, it never gets old. It truly is one of the best days of the year. Only in the Motor City can you see so many people and so many classic cars. Here are just a couple of pictures from last night.

Joe Dzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00887530353785936762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1973557910422837790.post-88152292475166720382009-08-15T00:38:00.008-04:002009-08-18T23:01:29.686-04:002008 NFL Preseason Champs
Let's not forget about the magical preseason that the Lions had in 2008. They became the 2008 preseason champions by going 4-0. What does that mean? Starting today, they must defend their title. They need to bring their preseason A-game because Tony Gonzalez and the Atlanta Falcons are coming to town. Hopefully the Lions can improve this year by going undefeated in the preseason and winning at least one regular season game.
Joe Dzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00887530353785936762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1973557910422837790.post-10701375674924004292009-08-14T11:52:00.006-04:002009-08-18T23:01:15.161-04:00Culpepper Will Start on Saturday
Jim Schwartz let everyone know that Daunte Culpepper will be the team's starting quarterback for the first preseason game. The Detroit Free Press reports:

Lions coach Jim Schwartz announced today the quarterback rotation for Saturday’s exhibition opener against Atlanta. Daunte Culpepper will start. It is only the first preseason game. Is this an indication that Culpepper may be the regular season starter? I guess that depends how both quarterbacks preform in the next four games. Since Schwartz did choose Culpepper to start tomorrow, I would have to say that he is winning the quarterback competition as of now.

Joe Dzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00887530353785936762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1973557910422837790.post-32086302220112494172009-08-13T19:10:00.008-04:002009-08-18T23:00:55.507-04:00Daunte Culpepper Can Be Great
According to the new offensive coordinator, Scott Linehan, we may see shades of the Culpepper that we all remember from his Minnesota days. How could you forget the days when Culpepper was on the cover of EA's Madden Football and those long bombs to Randy Moss? Linehan was his coordinator back then, so he should know what Culpepper can do. According to Linehan, via MLive:

"His energy and electricity is back," Linehan says. "I think that was his biggest challenge – get back to playing this game like a kid again. But now he has a certain amount of maturity that I think has become real positive for him."

Its words like this that make me think that Culpepper has some real potential this year. If this was Rod Marinalli talking, I wouldn't care, but its not. Its Linehan, who should know a lot about Culpepper and his talents. A healthy, motivated Shaun Rogers would be a huge plus for the defense. I would love to see something happen that would bring "Big Baby" back home. I was at the Denver game in 2007 when the Lions won 44-7. He took an interception 66 yards for a touchdown in that game. I have never seen a big man run like that.

Joe Dzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00887530353785936762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1973557910422837790.post-52784296394937268382009-08-11T01:14:00.005-04:002009-08-18T22:59:36.161-04:00Calvin Johnson is Unstoppable

Joe Dzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00887530353785936762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1973557910422837790.post-87635753845974632622009-08-10T22:57:00.006-04:002009-08-18T22:59:16.059-04:00Nine Wins and Seven Losses?
I have decided that the Lions will be 9 - 7 this year when the season is over. What does this mean? Well, a possible shot at the playoffs. I guess that all depends on how Green Bay does because I don't feel that Chicago or Minnesota have a shot at it this year. It will be Detroit or Green Bay.

You may think that I am being quite generous with this prediction. Let me start off by saying there should be four easy wins for the Lions this year. I am considering these games against Cleveland, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and San Francisco. I am also counting on two wins against Chicago; they don't have one person for Cutler to throw to. Minnesota is in the same boat as Chicago. They are weak at the quarterback/receiver position. This is why I'm splitting the series between Minnesota and Detroit. That leaves us with a total of seven wins. Where do the other two come from? Well, I'm giving us the Thanksgiving game, even though it is against Green Bay. There is a major change with the Lions this year and the fans are supporting it. There were 15,000 of us at the open practice! The new intensity will show with a win on national TV. The final win is my upset special, which will come in Baltimore. You may think its crazy, but if you can get through the Raven's defense, you should be able to win. I am not high on their offense at all this year, so I'm giving us a chance. That's it 9 - 7, call me crazy.

Week 1: at New Orleans Saints.....LOSS
Week 2: vs Minnesota Vikings......WIN
Week 3: vs Washington Redskins....LOSS
Week 4: at Chicago Bears..........WIN
Week 5: vs Pittsburgh Steelers....LOSS
Week 6: at Green Bay Packers......LOSS
Week 7: BYE
Week 8: vs St. Louis Rams.........WIN
Week 9: at Seattle Seahawks.......LOSS
Week 10: vs Minnesota Vikings......LOSS
Week 11: vs Cleveland Browns.......WIN
Week 12: vs Green Bay Packers......WIN
Week 13: vs Cincinnati Bengals.....WIN
Week 14: at Baltimore Ravens.......WIN
Week 15: vs Arizona Cardinals......LOSS
Week 16: at San Francisco 49ers....WIN
Week 17: vs Chicago Bears..........WIN

I really don't think that they will win nine games, but I do think that they have a chance to win nine games. Let's not forget what Miami did. They went from 1-15 to 11-5 overnight.

Joe Dzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00887530353785936762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1973557910422837790.post-80569513958147185552009-08-10T15:16:00.009-04:002009-08-19T23:25:16.735-04:00Jared DeVries' Season is Finished
There is bad news out of Lions Training Camp today. We need all the help that we can get right now on the defensive side. There should be some pick-ups in the near future.
